Many people experience feelings of anxiety during their visit to a dentist. If you are one of them, you can put your mind somewhat at ease knowing that Appleway Dental Clinics offers sedation dentistry in Red Deer and surrounding areas. Whether your teeth are sensitive or you require extensive dental procedures at once, we have the right options for you. At our dental offices, we offer both IV and oral sedation based on your specific requirements.
Oral Sedation: Medication Is Administrated Orally
Oral sedation involves administering a sedative in medication form prior to the procedure. While it’s considered to be a deeper form of sedation than nitrous oxide, it’s less when compared to IV sedation. However, the patient is still expected to arrange proper transportation to and from the appointment.
IV Sedation: Administered into the Blood Stream
At Appleway Dental Clinics, we recommend intravenous (IV) sedation for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety. It is an advanced technique in which a sedative is administered straight into the patient’s blood stream using an IV. Although the patient will remain conscious during the procedure, he or she will have little to no memory of the procedure itself. Only dentists who are qualified to provide IV sedation are allowed to administer this type of medication. Our qualified dentist will determine if you’re a proper candidate for IV sedation by examining your medical and dental history prior to the procedure.
Nitrous Oxide: Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative option commonly known as laughing gas. It is a colourless and sweet-smelling gas that is provided in measured amounts through a face mask. Breathing in the gas can help in reducing anxiety and fear. You may experience mild amnesia and may not remember everything that happened during the appointment.
