With our oral sedation option in Red Deer, you can relax while you get your dental work done at Appleway Dental Clinics. Similar to IV sedation, oral sedation is used to help put our patients with anxiety at ease during various dental procedures. The foremost difference between IV sedation and oral sedation is that the patient is sedated using an oral medication instead of medication that’s administered through an IV. It is also considered to be a deeper form of sedation than laughing gas, but less than IV sedation.
About Sedation Dentistry
It allows the patient to remain conscious during the procedure so he or she can answer the questions asked by our dentist. However, the patient comes out of the procedure with little to no memory. If you are overly anxious about visiting the dentist or feel uncomfortable sitting still for long periods of time while you’re having extensive dental work done, sedation dentistry might help you.
Pros of Oral Sedation
Check out some of the advantages of oral sedation:
No needles are required
Easy to administer (sedative in pill form)
Safe to administer (oral sedatives are strictly regulated and administered only by qualified dentists)
While you’re responsive, you’ll have little to no memory of the procedure
Cons of Oral Sedation
Some of the cons associated with oral sedation include:
Not immediately effective (oral sedation takes a little longer than IV sedation to be effective)
Sedation levels are harder to adjust (it takes time to increase the dosage if it was ineffective)
Can’t drive to your appointment (the patient will be asked to take the pill an hour or so prior to the appointment so it has time to kick in)
