Dr. Greg Barnett is an orthodontist who handles orthodontic patients at Appleway Dental Clinics, and is happy to provide treatments for both teenagers and adults. The two methods of orthodontics available at our practice include conventional orthodontics (metal bracket and wire braces) and Invisalign® aligners.
During the patient's first visit to learn whether or not orthodontic treatment can benefit his or her smile, Dr. Barnett does a full examination. Pictures are taken of the patient's smile along with x-rays. The patient can take this time to ask any questions they may have about orthodontics and learn which treatment may be best. They work with a treatment coordinator to discuss further details, such as financing with payment plans or scheduling regular visits over the course of treatment.
Patients as young as seven can visit Dr. Barnett for an orthodontic examination. The permanent teeth usually appear at this point and allow the dentist to determine any issues that may be developing in the child's smile. This is the best time to have early, interceptive treatment for the best results by the teenage years. Early treatment addresses crossbites, overcrowding, and overbites.
Older patients are encouraged to consider orthodontics to improve their smiles. Those uneasy about the idea of metal brackets and wires covering their smile during treatment may be happy to learn about Invisalign®. Invisalign® aligner trays can also straighten smiles and bites for adults, and are significantly different than traditional braces. These clear aligner trays are worn by the patient to straighten teeth and are very discreet.
Patients are given specific instructions on caring for their orthodontics, which will vary depending on the type they receive. Appliances should be taken care of by cleaning them regularly, and patients with traditional braces will be given a list of foods to avoid during treatment for the maintenance of their orthodontic work. Certain foods such as popcorn, taffy, and gum are not recommended for patients undergoing conventional orthodontics.
